God and Abraham had some interesting dialogue between them. God comes to him in Genesis 12:1-4 and says, “’Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. 3 I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.’ 4 So Abram departed as the Lord had instructed…”
So you want me to leave all that I am familiar with, all that I have worked for, and go to someplace I have never been. Something I have never trained for? What about my stock options God? That is a lot to leave on the table, don’t you think? Have you forgotten what 10% of those options could be used for? And this land that you talk about…where is it? What’s it look like? What do I tell people? You know they are going to have questions…they hate change!
This goes against my nature, in fact, it’s counter cultural! I remember when we were just about 6 months into our first capital campaign and we were already severely out of space. Our auditorium was full and our tiny lobby was just massive congestion…we needed a sign to warn those that were claustrophobic to beware. I didn’t have all the answers then and I still don’t today, but I did know that God was calling us to move. And move we did. It was a God thing. He opened up an opportunity for us to meet less than a mile from our property in an auditorium 4 times larger than the one in which we were meeting. It gave us the space we needed and helped us build a relationship with our school district and community. An ironic twist is that we were just discussing lobby congestion this week!
Frequently the question comes my way about when we will build. I’m not sure. God hasn’t told me yet and believe me, when He tells me you will find out! It’s kind of an Abraham deal here…we are continually moving toward the place that God has called us. We haven’t built any buildings yet, but we are sure building bridges! Bridges that are leading people to Jesus…we are building into lives and God is changing hearts.
Following God is like chasing a moving target because He strategically refuses to give us all the answers. It’s where trust comes in. We are to lean on Him. Period. I get the fact that we are “homeless,” really I do. But isn’t every church homeless? Our home is not of this world, Jesus said. We are passing through. At some point in our near future, God will give us the “go” to break ground and start our new building. In the meantime, He has already given us the “go” to seek out people who matter to Him!
So I guess this begs the question for you today…who or what are you leaning on? How are you doing with the moving targets in your life?
