Ownership

I want to share a powerful truth I heard Bill Hybels talk about at the Summit last week. In John 10, Jesus is talking about the difference between an owner and a hired hand. Basically, a hired hand will cut and run when the going gets tough. Jesus uses Himself as the ultimate example of an owner as He develops His role as a shepherd. Jesus is the Good Shepherd…He gives Himself for the sheep that are so dear to Him.

Basically, as I see it, there are two dynamic differences between an owner and a hired hand. When I think of “owner,” the words “sacrifice” and “vision” come to mind. Owners see the big picture and they are willing to do the difficult things, which are not necessarily the popular things. That’s what Jesus was trying to show us. The hired hands may be dedicated, but in the end, they have no vested interest. So the question arises, “What’s in it for me?” How does this benefit me and my needs?

Leading people to Jesus is why Fellowship exists. Our history over the last 6 years has been written with chapter after chapter of tearing down the barriers that exist between God and people. Unwittingly, churches today have erected walls that keep at bay those who are searching. The hurdles in life are tough enough without the church adding more obstacles. Now let me say this: I am not saying that this is some grand conspiracy or even intentional on the church’s part, but make no mistake…the church has lost its way.

I am happy to say that God has brought us back online. The barriers and the walls have been torn down. It hasn’t been easy and it didn’t take place overnight, but they are gone. The value of those far from God has been elevated and people are now learning to leverage their faith for eternity. We have become Sunday “environmentalists” that seek to create an inviting and comfortable atmosphere for our guests. People are moving from a consumer mentality to that of a contributor. There has been opposition. Change isn’t easy. As Bishop Jakes says, you will always have your “haters,” so you might as well be what God calls you to be!

I want to say thanks to those of you who own what God is doing at Fellowship. You get it…you sacrifice for the big picture and each week, you partner with us for the kingdom! We couldn’t do it without you. Maybe you are reading this today and God is saying to you it’s time to “buy in,” time to become part of the most exciting team in the Delaware Valley…He is calling you to partner with us.
