I would like to take the next couple of days and post some of my notes and thoughts of the various speakers we experienced at Catalyst. Patrick Lencioni is the author of the book The Five Dysfunctions of a Team which has sold more than a million copies during the past five years. Lencioni spoke on the Ministry of Management. This is the second time I’ve heard him speak. I’m drawn to his style, I think in part, because he is an off the chart ADD guy. In other words, he can be all over the place!
If we are to take serious the management of people then we must see our opportunity to make a difference in their lives. Leaders need to understand what “job misery” looks like for employees. Lencioni described 3 components to job misery.
1. Irrelevance: people need to know they are making a difference in some way – otherwise they will feel like their efforts are of no significance. As a leader, am I reminding people on a consistent and regular basis that they are making a difference?
2. Immeasurement: Misery sets in when people don’t understand what a win looks like. Cleary defined goals and objectives are essential – feedback is big here. I had a boss once who told me “no news is good news.” What’s up with that? Did I say he was the worst boss I ever had! How can my job not be interesting enough to talk about to my manager? People need to hear what they are doing right, not just what doesn’t meet expectations.
3. Anonymity – feeling like they are invisible or unimportant is a big factor in an unfulfilling job. This one challenged me in a big way. What do I know about the people that I work with? What do I know about their families…their dreams? When I am stressed or feel the pressure of deadlines it is difficult for me to stop and look people in the eyes and dial in to what they are saying. Huge stuff!
I want to add value to the people I manage and work with. Management is ministry. People can come to Christ by the way they are managed! People can be encouraged in their walk with Christ by the way they are managed!
