Communication

I’m amazed at the arrogance in our world today. We see it in newspapers, television, and the internet. It seems that there are so many experts. Debating worldviews fill up the cable news shows. Liberals verses conservatives…war hawks verses peace lovers. Last night they were trying to lay blame about who was responsible for the fires in California. It was an environmentalist going up against an anti-global warming pundit. Everyone seems to think they are so smart and they have it all figured out. Maybe it’s just me but the older I get the less certain I have become about a lot of stuff I used to hold to and yet the more certain I feel about the goodness and love of God. There are many people I listen to or read about where I agree with what they say, but I just hate the way they say it! They’re angry. They are arrogant. It repulses me.

Jesus was a master at speaking the truth in love. He was amazing at teaching humility by serving those who followed him. Don’t get me wrong, Christ followers should have strong standards in their lives. We need to project confidence in Jesus and his teaching. I would love to see many of us lose the “edge” though. James said, “God opposes the proud but favors the humble.” He also said in chapter 4 and verse 10 to “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.” The world’s culture and way of communicating should not infiltrate the church and its people. Authenticity demands that we come clean with our own short-comings. My confidence comes from God and seeing the work that he has done in me and those around me.

Think about how you communicate today. Would someone follow you to Jesus because they hear something different in your tone?
