John Maxwell - Adding Value To People

John Maxwell gave a good talk about adding value into people. He seems like a really great and genuine guy. His insights into leadership are powerful. His bio says he has sold over 12 million books. Wow! His top two books The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership and Developing the Leader Within You, have each sold over a million copies. Here is my take on what he said…
4 Things that add value to people

  1. Value people: you can’t fake it here…people know if they are important to you. It sounds so elementary when you think about it but it’s huge. You have to ask yourself the question? Are people important to me? Do I value them?
  2. Make yourself more valuable: You have to keep working at it…get better at what you do and be strategic in what you do. Continue to grow and stay sharp. Kind of begs the question…are you coasting?
  3. Know and relate to what others value: Get your head out of the clouds and get to know the people around you. What’s important to them? What is important to them and why?
  4. Do the things God values: He sets the agenda. When you boil it all down God is all about people. It can almost sound like a cliché in church circles but it is true that people matter to God and they should matter to us.

So to wrap it up you do one of two things to the people around you. You either add or subtract value from them. All of us know people that just suck the life right out of you. I hate to be around people like that and I refuse for that environment to ever be part of our team. We all are selfish at our core so adding value into others will take some intentionality. Thanks to all you who have sown into my life and continually build me up.

From the very first day I met you, you have always been one of those guys who always adds value to people. I appreciate that about you.
In your talk today about Legacy you mentioned that there are people that have come along side each of us, and encouraged us, or did something to inspire us to move on to greater things. As I look back over my life there are a few men who have believed in me and encouraged me to do great things for God. I would not be in ministry had you not believed in me almost three years ago. Had it not been for you I would not be enjoying ministry today. I am living a dream and I owe it to you. I just wanted you to know that it means the world that you believed in me even when I didn't. Thanks my friend!
